Learning Experiences

Learning Experiences:

W: Where the unit is going.
H: Hook students and hold their interest.
E: Equip students, explore the issues, and experience the ideas.
R: Provide opportunities to rethink and revise.
E: Allow students to exhibit their understanding and evaluate their work.

1.) Students will bring an empty yogurt container to class to use for a flower pot.

2.) I will provide students with soil and a seed to plant their own flower seeds in their yogurt containers.

3.) Students will watch a youtube video on photosynthesis.

4.) I will have an unlabeled flower on the Smartboard. Students will come up and label the parts of the flower on the Smartboard.

5.) Students will journal their experiences that they have had with the growth of their flower and make observations.

6.) The class will walk outside of the school to look at the different flowers and plants that are planted.

7.) I will provide the students each with a flower, they will dissect the flower and label its parts.

8.) Students will create a book for the stages of life for a flower with cutouts.

9.) I will explain the process of pollination (moving pollen from one plant to another). Students will create their own flowers and bees with tissue paper, cotton balls, pipe-cleaners and tape.

10.) When the students flowers are grown, they will pick them and do a plant press activity to dry and preserve their plants. Materials needed: cardboard, rubber bands, newspapers, scissors and the students flowers.

Students will be pro-active in all of the lessons. Through these experiences students will learn the growth of a flower, the parts and functions of the flower, pollination and bees and information about photosynthesis.
